About

John Doxey is a San Francisco-based oral historian. For as long as I can remember, I’ve taken great joy in connecting with people from various places and walks of life, and uncovering stories that may otherwise go untold.

I began interviewing people about their jobs while living in the Netherlands in 2017-2019. Since 2019, I’ve been recording personal histories in San Francisco, and managing the Telegraph Hill Dwellers’ Oral History Project.

My earlier work as a journalist includes general assignment reporting for the Associated Press in Baltimore and Nebraska, and freelance reporting for BusinessWeek and other publications in Romania, Turkey and California.

My other career has focused on improving safety, healthcare and quality of life for adults with physical and cognitive disabilities. After six years as a case manager in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood, and four years as a geriatric care manager in the East Bay, I now work with the San Francisco Public Guardian’s office.

I was born and raised in San Francisco, and attended UC Berkeley (bachelor’s degree in history), Northwestern University (master’s in journalism) and San Francisco State University (master’s in gerontology).
